Hot Lix Hawaiian Style (formerly Hawaiian Steel Guitar Ho'olaule'a).
This year an ALL NEW program format for FOUR CONTINUOUS HOURS OF JAM SESSIONS featuring steel guitar with Da Bes slack key and 'ukulele SOLOING TOGETHER. Venue is Kapi'olani Park Bandstand, from 3:15 pm to 7:15 pm. Concert is Free, of course. Sit in chairs or bring a picnic and mats to sit on the grass. Committee: Alan Akaka, Hanalei deWilligen, John Ely, Greg Sardinha and Marjorie Scott are hard at work on the program, funding, and logistics. We HIGHLY recommend coming at 2 p.m. to hear the Royal Hawaiian Band which plays for one hour just before our gig.
Some of the expected Hot Lix players will be Alan Akaka with George Kuo and Dennis Kamakahi, Greg Sardinha on steel with his group "Po'okela"; "Superkids" Al Greene, Jr. (16) on steel, Ikaika Brown (14) on slack key, and Imua Garza (13) on 'ukulele. Steve Cheney and 17 year old Benjamin Cheney will play steel together, and Ronald Kanahele and his group will have Ronald's nephews Kona and Keli'i Lau playing steel with him. Also several visiting "pros" from Japan and California. DON'T MISS THIS "Gettin' down" Hawaiian steel and strings treat. |

Day trip to Moloka`i. Open to any HSGA'er who wants to go. Two steel guitar performances are scheduled. Arrangements are underway. We hope that in return for doing a concert, we may be given a tour of the Island sights. (In case you're wondering, flying time to Moloka'i is apx. 15 minutes!). |
Monday
May 12
|
HSGA at Polynesian Culture Center, located in Laie, on the Windward side, about a 50-60 minute drive from Waikiki. PCC offers a 25% discount to our members on admission, dinner and evening show (a Hawaiian extravaganza!). (If you haven't been there, it's well worth the price and the time, to be immersed in Polynesia for a few hours. Many acres of native houses, history, costumes, dances, crafts, professionally and lovingly done by the students of Brighham Young University, next door. A true hands-on experience.) |
*** You're invited to participate as an HSGA member and take advantage of all the Hawaiian music and steel guitar fun and comraderie ***
Snail Mail the Membership Application in these pages with your 1996-'97 dues; you'll get the Summer, Fall and Winter HSGA QUARTERLY issues and your membership card in return. The Spring issue mails in late March. In fact, why not pay for TWO years NOW and avoid the $2 per year dues increase which takes effect July 1, 1997
(Our Membership year runs from July 1 to June 30).
