Announcing HSGA's Annual Joliet Convention

It's time to plan a mini-vacation for Fall 2000. HSGA'S Annual convention in Joliet, Illinois will be October 5,6,7at the Holiday Inn Express (as usual). Jerry Byrd, the Master of Touch and Tone, has been invited to be HSGA's Guest Artist this year. He has not yet said "yes". (When you're 80 years young, you have a right to say "no". Whatever the outcome, there WILL be a Guest Artist from Hawai`i at Convention 2000.)

For HSGA Members
Registration forms are in the Spring HSGA Quarterly. REMEMBER: HSGA's membership year begins July 1, 2000. Your $26 dues need to be paid, and right now is not too soon, so that you can get your hotel and convention registration discounts.

For HSGA "First Timers"
If you've never been to convention - THIS IS YOUR YEAR. Some Hawaiian steel guitar players and many "just listeners" have been attending for ten years or more - it's "old home week", and you will be warmly welcomed, and introduced around to new friends. Lots of Aloha here, folks. (Read Isaac Akuna's "first-timer" experience below.)

For three full days, there are six full hours of Hawaiian music with steel guitar on stage; ono food lots of good "talk story". Guest steel guitar artists come from Hawai`i for the festivities. If enough steel players want one, Alan Akaka will give an evening question and answer workshop about playing techniques or other.

Every night, there's usually one or more steel guitar jam sessions going on, and on, and ON - sometimes until dawn. Some members call it the "no sleep" convention! Don't play steel? Fine. They need `ukuleles and rhythm guitars and bass, and plenty of listeners. The convention ends with a huge Hawaiian-style Lu`au. Fun and friendship guaranteed.

NOT an HSGA member yet?
Join the crowd. You'll find a membership application form at this website. On stage at convention you'll hear both non-pedal (Hawaiian) and pedal steel, Dobro, sometimes E-Harp. If you're a player, you'll probably find some nighttime jam sessions cutting loose on Blue Grass, Country, jazz. Always a hula dancer joining in at the Hawaiian jams.

Notice to Members from Don Weber, Convention Manager
You will absolutely need to get your hotel reservation in by September 1. The auto racing season is still on; any guest rooms NOT booked by HSGA after that date will be immediately taken by racing enthusiasts - as will other hotel rooms in town.

E komo mai! Come join the fun!
