Joliet Members' Convention '99

The 1999 12th annual all Hawaiian steel, play 'til you drop, convention promises to be the biggest and best ever. You could say we're ending the 20th Century with a BLAST!

Guest Hawaiian steel artist this year is Herbert Hanawahine, long-time steel player with Auntie Genoa Keawe and her group. Herbert's steel stylings are like no other, and HSGA is happy he said "yes". In addition -- and maybe never again -- Alan Akaka, Bobby Ingano and Isaac Akuna are ALL flying in from Hawai`i for the festivities. Says Bobby "had so much fun last time, have to go back -- they gave me vacation from work just so I could." Tells you something, doesn't it?

Warning: get your sleep now, if you're planning to attend convention. These guys do all-night jam sessions after a full day of music sessions. Not to be missed -- and convention regulars are prepared. Our Japan members call this the "no sleep" convention. Just can't get Duke Ching or Gerald Ross or Tom Swatzell or Alan to go to bed until dawn. Convention always winds up with a big Lu`au and entertainment.

HSGA members
If you haven't paid your 99-2000 dues yet, please do so today. Our membership year started July 1. You'll need to be paid up to get hotel and convention discounts. Registration forms are in the Spring HSGA Quarterly; airport limousine and convention schedule information is in the Summer Quarterly.

Non-members
We'd love you to join and come be with us. It's a warm Ohana (family) say first-timers to convention, no matter if you're just learning, or just want to listen to lots of good Hawaiian music with steel guitar. For steel learners and players, lots of playing tips available. Alan will usually present a short evening workshop to answer technique questions, for those who want it. And you can pick up a lot of neat styling tricks, just listening.

A Membership Application is available to download here at this site. Tell us if you want to attend convention, and we'll mail you the forms. You have until September 1 to return them to the Registrar and Holiday Inn Express, which addresses are listed on the forms.

E komo mai! Come join HSGA at play (steel guitar that is). We promise you a great Hawaiian-style time.
