Just returned from a great trip. Met with many old friends, needed to get out of the Waikiki concrete jungle, out into the Manoa valley, beautiful blue ginger in bloom, plumeria trees, bird-song aplenty, the torquoise coloured ocean, a gentle sea turtle that passed within a metre of me, double rainbows,.. and also a little steel guitar... contacted Uncle Ronald (what a great job he is doing with his young protegès), Wayne Shishido sounding as good as always..others..also had a chance to talk about steel guitar to Kanoe Miller who has been dancing the hula at the Halekulani since I first saw her during the Jerry Byrd days, a uniquely graceful presence... I was interviewed on TV, and this will be broadcast on cable station OC16 at 7.30pm Hawaiian time (10.30 pm PDT on Wednesday 8th ( 6.30 am GMT, Thursday 9th). Also on Internet oc16.tv, Brown Bags to Stardom, If you care to tune in, watch out for a "plug" on the steel guitar! Kay

The way Hawaiians love to make music is done in the back yard, no performance pressure, just a relaxing time together making music at the kanakapila. And don’t forget to watch the last video, it is nahenahe. The Hawaiian Steel guitarist in the following video is a well know steel player in the Islands, Uncle Ron Kanahele, who takes a prominent part at the kanakapila. Uncle Ron has in the last few years devoted himself to helping the young people of Hawaii learn to play the Hawaiian Steel Guitar the old fashioned way. He has a lot of aloha and gives it out liberally in his playing and singing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwTN5_NYQww&feature=related Another clip of Uncle Ron, but the acoustics are not the best but seems more clear later in the video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4x4fX2HnKI&feature=related The steel guitarist in the following video just blends in with the rest of the group. He is not taking a prominent place, but plays a part in making the music enjoyable. The name of the steel guitarist is Uncle Braddah as he is affectionately called in the Islands. I met him about five years ago. He is a great guy and comes to the HSGA conventions in Waikiki to support Hawaiian steel guitar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFRqDZueyXY&feature=related One haole boy allowed in here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri2pTOtzSqY&feature=related And one very relaxing blend of voices and a nice steel guitar ending by Uncle Braddah to say all pau. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mifM5w0pAc&feature=related Aloha, Don

I have been mostly out of circulation from the Forum due to a very busy schedule, but I have had the opportunity to have a very leisurely time this afternoon and have been able to more carefully read this fine thread with Basil's posting of Dr. Lis' article and David's contributions. I have found it all very interesting. You have done some good analysis, David, and thanks for including the pictures. It adds a lot. I was wondering how much tension occurred in the negotiations with the record company's back in those days. It appeared the the record company officials did the dictating and the entertainers complied. Aloha, Don

This was an interesting thread, and has peaked my interest in hearing Don Banduria play the ukelele. Since, I do not have the album, is it possible to post some of the album for educational purposes? Aloha, Don

ALOHA CALYOD I have the same recording as mentioned by John Marsden to Basil -- I have the tape version not the LP. I think it was sometime in the early 90's she was performing at the Reef or perhaps the Moana and she was promoting her tape of her family and I bought one. It was produced by Violet Pahu Lilikoi. An address was listed as: Lilikoi Records, 1010 4th Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96816. They may not be living there today, if you contact them let me know if you have any success.
