The Fountain Pickup
02/03/08 at 3:31pm

A recent febrile state ... led to a series of bizarre ideas ... one's that never occurred to me before.

Basically a way to "shoot up" a magnetic field ... tall, wide , strong and most importantly ... uniform  ...

It engulfs a large coil and  strings ... very similar to the field generated by my H-Shoe, MRI, Convertible and Potbelly assemblies ...

Except this has ... no "over the strings" component ...  my first conventional style ...  "under the strings" unit.

Very different than anything I know of (IE ...  P90s, Bigsbys, Charlie Christians, Chicago Steel, etc ) ...

Well, I felt good enough to build a crude prototype  (no photos lips sealed ) ... . and damned if doesn't work ... bigtime.   Grin

Might be the item I concentrate on "this season" ... aside from some "select" other units for my buddies ...  lips sealed  Wink

This time ... I just might try for one  Wink

I'll be encasing the prototype in a block of opaque black casting epoxy ...   lips sealed

I thought about calling it ... "The Flux Cannon"   Grin Grin Grin

This could have been the opening of a story by H.G. Wells. I look forward to the next exciting episode.

Cool  Ok Rick, you got me going again.  I've got a great big George L in my 12 string SuperSlide.  I can see a "Fountain" in place of it right now!  This is going to be be great for those of  us who like to play "top down convertable" style.  Finally, an Aiello naked pickup.  Wink

Well, I put the "ultra crude" prototype in my Excel JB Frypan ... and demo-ed it for ...  "Da Boss" last night ...

Went up against a "Potbelly",  an "MRI" and an "H-Shoe" ... in various Dustpans ...

She's gonna "bankroll"  20 units ... (they ain't gonna be cheap) ...  Grin Grin Grin

Now if she'd just "bankroll" that 20 yr old Au Pair ...  Grin Grin Grin

Sign me up Rick.  4-1/2 x 1-3/8" OD.  George L mounting.  I'll send the mounting details if you don't have a George L lying around.  Wind it HOT!  Cheesy

This unit will be 1" tall  &  1.25" wide ...

It's "sensing" length will be 3.5" long ... which will give it ... a total length of around 4.5" .

All mounts ... will have to be made independently from the unit ... and attach  via (2) # 8-32 threaded holes in its base ...

It's  big and very heavy ...

It just don't need a "top" ...   Cool

Maybe I should call it the "South Beach Pickup" ... right Jeff S.  kiss kiss kiss

Sounds like it will work like a charm.  Will the sensing length of 3.5" have enough "give" to pick up the outer two strings of a 3.75" outside to outside string spacing?  Huh

Nope ...

But that 3.5" isn't "set in stone" either ...

The height of 1" is though ...  so its gonna require a deep rout (like a Ricky unit, etc).

The max "sensing" length that I can ... as far as my calculations predict ... go ... is 4" ....

So 3.75" falls within my "safe zone" ... giving that unit a total length of 4.75" ...

I take it, thats what the 12 stringers are ???

Yep, and wide spaced 10 stringers.  That's the way my super slide is set up now.  If you go with the 3.75" sensing area and 4.5" OD you'll expand the market for your "south beach" to hundreds of GL-10 users world wide.  Also, the SuperSlide's body is hollow, so the depth of the pickup is no problem.

I'll shot for that then  ... thanks for the info ...

But that's one of the perils of winding with # 38 ... it takes up alot of real estate.

# 38 and the height of the unit ... non-negotiable  Grin Grin Grin

Wink Cool Bean, man, and if a 4.75" OD is necessary for the 3.75" sensing area, no problem!  That's what they made dremel tools, routers, rat tale files and milling machines for.  Grin

P.S. Thanks for cleaning up my "quote" mess

I'll shoot for 4.5" total length / 3.75" sensor ...

I ordered all the stuff today (striking now ... before "Da Boss" changes her mind)

Terry, when it all arrives ... I'll build you the first one ... and ship it out  ...

You can be my "lab rat" ...   Wink

When's that Dallas Show ...  Huh undecided Grin
