JB on Frypan Without Volume Control

JB without volume control foot pedal playing beautifully

While I like all of Jerry's steel playing, I particularly like it when he doesn't use his volume control.  Here in this number you have straight steel from the Master.

What do you think?

Hi, Don.

If I understand you correctly: although he had his foot on a pedal, he didn't use it during this tune?  I agree I didn't hear any obvious volume swells but I couldn't say for certain he wasn't using it; maybe the use, if at all, was very subtle (?)

Sorry Don ... he's using his VP ...   Wink

Exactly how I was  tryin' to detail his use ... over on the SGF ...

http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=128105  ...  undecided

On songs like this ... he uses it to "diminish" some of the attack ... particularly in the slower section ...

I have this video ... bought it shortly after it was filmed  ...

And if you watch it on a real TV  ...  you clearly see his VP use ...

Although it is tough to see on the tiny YouTube screen ...  undecided

Tiny downward movements .. as he picks ...

Like during the time spans of  ... 1:23-1:28  ...  2:22-2:23 ...  3:15-3:18  ... on the Youtube clip  ...

Look at the glare on his black shoe ...  Grin

And the little finger harmonics at 2:36 ... you can see his left knee moving  ... as he pulls up the volume a tad ...

Call me a "Byrd Nerd"  if ya like ...  Wink ...

But this is how I learned .... scrutinizing my 8+ hrs of JB videos ...

I hope you appreciate this, though  ...  Grin Cheesy Wink

I had to suffer thru a 40 minute download ... via my "dial up" connection ... just to get those times to put up here ...  Grin  Grin Grin

PS:  Thats not the only thing this particular clip shows ... but thats for a different thread ... at a different time  Wink Wink Wink

Rick / Don, Yes, I spotted that too, heel down full on but, does it really matter whether the guy used a pedal or whatever to accomplish what he wanted to do, I often wondered about the tremolo effect he produced on, I think, Bells of St. Mary's, now, that was something, how does one rock the foot up and down so fast, I use a spring loaded pedal and, I would find it difficult to do that, I've tried it, KU

It's hard for me to tell if a volume pedal is used or not unless it is used exaggerately.  I was a little surprised to see Duke Kaleolani Ching using one last Oct. and saying what a great tool it was.

Just to explain the logic of Jerry having it "Backwards" it's so as he picks DOWNWARD with his fingers (Well kinda) the pedal goes down also, to as Ric said, "Diminish the attack"
The method of diminishing attack with a "Normally Wired" pedal would require thinking down AND up at the same time.. I do believe that the original volume pedals in the thirties were wired this way.
