British Pathe Hawaiian Videos
09/10/09 at 9:54am

I found the following videos whilst searching for some info on Felix Mendlessohn's Hawaiian Serenaders.
Just to prove that Hawaii mania did reach these shores back between the 30s to 50s.

Clara & Elena Oyuela, 1930 2 girls singing and playing acoustic Hawaiian guitars in rather formal atire and surroundings.

Jack Plant, 1935 Jack singing "The Isle of Capri" and "What a Difference a Day Makes" with acoustic steel backup.

Rudy Starita, 1936 introducing the newly invented electric steel guitar (National-Dobro by the looks of things).

Roland Peachy and his original novelty quartette, La Rosita - 1938 this looks like the same triple neck guitar that features in some of the following clips.

Eddie Peabody and his Beachcombers, 1938 "Song of the Islands" and "Hilo March" with electric banjo and electric mandolin.

Jack Simpson and his Beachcombers, 1939 steel player on backup duties, looks like he's playing a National-Dobro electric with a flat slide.

Felix Mendelssohn's Hawaiian Serenaders, 1939 - triple neck guitar. The guy switches between necks during the song (not something I'd have ever thought about doing being a single neck player).

Felix Mendelsohn's Hawaiian Serenaders (aka Felix Mendelssohn), 1940 Looks like the same triple neck steel with horseshoe magnets as the previous clip. Jazzy arrangement.

Felix, 1941 - double neck steel with horseshoes sitting on top of amp with a cover on it.. Accordian accompaniment (well we do things differently over here).

Felix and co, 1941 More accordian, playing jazz.

Felix and co, 1942 doing Aloha Oe - strange looking steel.

Another clip of Felix and co. 1943

Felix Mendelssohn's Hawaiian Serenaders, 1944
Felix and co, Sophisticated Hula, 1944 - left handed steel player!

Felix and co, Sweet Leilani - 1946
Felix and co, Sophisticated Hula - 1946
Felix and co, Paradise Isle - 1947 - along a river in Berkshire, most probably summer too (judging by the lack of rain / wooly jumpers)

THE KALUA ISLANDERS (aka KALVA ISLANDERS) 1947

Felix and co, Queen's Restaurant - Bournemouth, Dorset, 1951

Sorry guys, I messed up the formatting for the links. They should hopefully work now (fingers crossed).

I remember, we thought it was great at the time and, I recognise quite a lot of the players, PEECHE, BROOKER, when he played PIANO behind PEACHE, KEALOAHA LIFE [LOWLIFE] to the boys in fun, PULU MOE getting in there, LUISA REYES, ROGER SMITH, the left handed Steel Guitar player, I think, I can't say much about the Hula Dancers because, they were not, I guess it passed as such with the dim lighting, most, I had not seen before since , I was playing with AIRPLANES in the North African Desert, you know them four engine things that drop tho things that go BOOM, ku

I added a few other clips I managed to find in the Pathe resources to the list above.

Does anyone know what the final song is their playing on the 1951 clip? Sounds very dark and un-Hawaiian but I wouldn't mind trying to find it and learn it.

Paul, That 'Medley' consists of, Aloha Oe, Papio and am inclined to guess that, the last one sounds something like E Lili'u E, in parts at least, once some of these guys get going it's anyones guess, maybe someone with better Ears than me [I'm almost stone deaf] can decipher the thing, KU
