Coconut Wire(reprinted from the Fall 96 Newsletter) Funny true story -- asked Bobby Ingano (pictured on left) to play his "Ho'opono Slide" (from Greg Sardinha's new "Made in Hawai'i: Hawaiian Steel Guitar" recording). Bobby answers "I can't -- I don't know it -- haven't heard the record yet." (Eh! listen to it on HSGA's phone message tape). Appears Bobby came to the recording session with the first bars of this great tune, but no ending. Greg and Bobby together finished the tune, as you hear it, but since it was never written, Bobby will have to hear it to play it. We luv ya, Bobby. Did you know that HSGA has a 'ukulele celebrity in our midst? Fred Fallin of Chicago called us last year before the Joliet convention, drove down to see what was up, and joined HSGA on the spot. Now we discover him in Honolulu, on tour, having just presented his traveling program "'Ukulele Yesterdays and Tim Pan Alley: A Reminiscent Voyage" at Bishop Museum, and performing in the Don Ho Show in Waikiki. Come to find out , Fred, a retired teacher, is a bonafide Musicologist -- an authority on the history of 'ukulele in American music. This Fall, he missed Joliet because he was a featured entertainer at 'Ukulele Expo '96, in Montague, Massachusetts. Apparently, Fred will present his musical program (filled with some fine vaudeville, and lots of fun) wherever he's invited, so if you have a show club, convention, church group, retirement center, etc., you may want to contact him: Fred Fallin, 11234 S. Langley Av., Chicago, IL 60628 (312-928-2255). Doug Lomax anticipates "a good group" from New Zealand will be coming to HSGA's Honolulu convention next May. We are delighted to hear from Doug that the New Zealand Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association is "doing very well, with growing membership, and the musicianship is improving all the time." The articles in the club's monthly "Gazette" are interesting, especially "What Are They Singing About?" which gives both the Hawaiian words and English translation of some of our popular standards. Suggestion to the club's Secretary, N.K. McKenzie: bring your membership forms next May. We're sure there are more HSGA members who'd want to support you. We look forward to greeting you in May and hearing some more Maori songs, as well. Your prayers, please. Last April, Buddy Hew Len fell off a ladder. To date he is still in a coma. His wife, Pearl, says he sometimes shows signs of coming out of the coma, but then slips back again. Sometimes he smiles and tries to say something, but can't. No way to know what's next, the doctors say. Wally Pfeifer says "Everybody! Say a prayer for Buddy and his family. If you already have -- say another one." We miss you, Buddy. Please come back to us. If you'd like to send a supportive note to Pearl Hew Len: 478 Krauss St., Honolulu, HI 96813. HSGA * HAWAIIAN
