Ono-licious food and kani ka pila were the order of the day, on a recent Sunday in Tokyo. HSGA's Japan Coordinator, Tom Ikehata, and his lovely wife, Setsuko, threw a great "Meet & Greet" luncheon for Alan Akaka. Alan got to meet and jam steel with a group of HSGA members. Dr. Saito, Dr. Terashi and Miss Kamata traveled for two hours each way on the Bullet Train from Kobe, just to be there! Now that's devotion! Mahalo nui loa, Tom, Alan had a blast.
We learned from Tom that Dr. Terashi has a sound-proof Hawaiian music studio in his Kobe clinic, and Mitsuo Fujii is the owner of "Fuzzy" steel guitar company. Alan was also honored to meet Wataru Misuhashi, who owns the club "Conie's" and is a legendary Hawaiian guitar player.
One hitch though: the afternoon "talk story" got around to Joliet convention, and Tom convinced everyone that "Joliet" was synonymous with "No Sleep". (See how you are, Alan?) At least four HSGA Japan members are seriously thinking about coming to Joliet convention this year... to play steel and "no sleep"! (Don Weber - maybe you should set up a cot in the Jam Session room, just in case one of our night owl steel players needs a snooze.)
