Malcolm Rockwell - Maui, HI

"The discography, now entitled "Hawaiian & Hawaiian Guitar Records 1890-1960" is doing very well. I'm in the middle of 3rd draft revisions, and have just entered a HUGE Swedish & European list (courtesy of Goergen Antonsson, a distinguished Swedish discographer). I am still seeking personnel data, especially for period 1890-1920 acoustically-recorded groups. Also any information about pre-1925 Hawaiian recording field trips by U.S. recording companies." (If you have info for Malcolm, write him soon at: P.O. Box 1064, Kula, HI 96790-1064, as publishing date is imminent.)

Ivan Sinclair - Belleville, Canada

"Since you folks are my only contact with Hawaiian news and music, you do not realize how much I appreciate digesting the magazine -- over and over. I have not been blest with worldly goods or wealth, but I have been blest with a meager talent for music. I intent to focus more on Gospel music, in order to use whatever talent I have in His service. My right hand seems to be getting worse at times, but praise God, I can still play steel guitar, and while I still can, I feel I should praise Him in music." (Ivan says his courageous wife, Lorraine, who had a paralyzing stroke last year, and was determined to "beat this thing", is now doing quite well and needs little assistance . "With God's help", Ivan says. Yes, Ivan, "from whom all Blessings flow".)

Jimmy Cathro - Glasgow, Scotland

(Jimmy also had a serious stroke a year ago) "...bitterly disappointed we could not attend the Honolulu convention in 1997. ... have good CD and tape player for Hawaiian music, so it's not so bad. Best thanks for Quarterlies, they are much enjoyed, and will send article on one our musicians, Jimmy McColloch". (Folks, please cheer up Jimmy's "off days" with your aloha letters and snapshots. Life in a wheelchair can't be too much fun. James Cathro, 33 Kirkton Cresc., Milton of Campsie, Glasgow, Scotland G65 8DP)

Wayne Washburn - Kailua, HI

"I am currently taking lessons from Jerry Byrd and plan to hopefully get good enough to play professionally one day. As you probably know, when you learn from Jerry you WILL learn to 'do it right'! (He's even going to build his own guitar with John Tipka's instruction book. That's real "immersion" learning! Way to go, Wayne.)

Stanley Gramacke - Pennsylvania

(a new member) "I have enjoyed playing and listening to Hawaiian steel guitar music for many years -- it is unique and original. I can recall Hawai`i Calls broadcasts when I was in grade and high school. My dad had an original National "O" Resophonic guitar and took lessons in Detroit around 1932."

Bob Schaefer - Burleson, TX

"I enjoy the Quarterly very much and appreciate the addition of the musical notation along with Tab on the songs that you (Alan) publish. Please continue this as it is most helpful to me."

Dale Nightwine - "East Kansas Territory"

"The groups to play steel with here are Country, and I'm concentrating on trying to learn back-up and fills. Have a good time. Trying to get people together who would like some Hawaiian music is very difficult. I have found a lead on some ladies who hula, but it's hard to catch them at home." (Try some Jerry Byrd steel on your Country players --THAT'll get their attention I bet! As for the hula ladies -- any Kahauanu Lake Trio album will pull `em in -- all hula rhythm. Of course they're not home, they're out dancing!)
