Check out a Kanui and Lula recording

I’ll bet you’ve never heard before!

Most collectors and even passing listeners of the early era of Hawaiian music are aware of the Odeon / Parlophone recordings by Kanui and Lula. Their “Tomi Tomi” / “Oua Oua” are essential recordings and the 78 is a must-have disk for any collector of this music. It obviously sold extremely well, judging by the number of copies that are available at any given time. Their “My Little Grass Shack In Kealakekua” is equally well known and wonderful. However, the 78 itself is much, much rarer. It took me 10 years to finally score a copy and complete my set of these 1928 recordings.

Many collectors, even deep in the Hawaiian record world, were totally unaware that Kanui and Lula also issued a series of recordings in Germany in 1922 on the Star-Record / Beer labels until the lovely book / CD reissue was released by Grass Skirt a couple of years ago. When that project was completed, no copy of the disk I present today was available for inclusion in the project. So it’s missing from the accompanying CD.

I have never owned a Star / Beer disk. And I’m thrilled to have added this lovely example of “Honolulu hula high” / “On the trail of home sweet home Hawain” by the Original Hawaiian-Truppe Kanui und Lula, with original sleeve to my record shelves. It’ll probably be my most important collection addition of 2025 and I’m thrilled to share it here today.

Here’s the 78 transfer link: https://youtu.be/bB3DAr62ny0 Enjoy!
